On January 27 the United Way ELEVATE Host Committee hosted a Guess Who game night. Remember the classic board game?
Over 40 individuals joined us at Sun King Brewing in downtown Indianapolis and raised $520 toward our $80,000 ELEVATE 2020 goal. WOW.
Check out a few photos posted on our Flickr page.
Our goal? That participants wouldn’t have to “guess who” the faces of homelessness are in our community, any longer.
The perception of “homeless” might not be what you expect. Many are individuals or families “cost-burdened” by their rent; a term we use to describe someone who must allocate 1/3 of their income to housing, which can be especially difficult when catastrophe strikes – a lost job, high hospital bill or car accident – driving them deeper in debt, putting their housing security in jeopardy.
At Guess Who game night we heard from Nate Lichti, our Sr. Director of the Basic Needs Impact Fund, share some tough statistics about the housing crisis we are experiencing in Central Indiana.
- In 2016 only NYC evicted more tenants than Indianapolis
- 33% of the homeless population are Veterans
- 17,863 local public school students experienced homelessness in 2017
What can you do? Help us support programs addressing the need for more safe, affordable and equitable housing.
